Cox, John Rufus -- The following information on Pvt. John Rufus Cox has been supplied by his grandson Mr. Jackie R. Cox. John Cox was the great grandson of a Walsh immigrant Emanuel Cox who came to America in the 1770s. He later moved to South Carolina where he joined the colonial army and served under General Francis Marion. Some time in the 1820s or so Emanuel's grandson John Cox & his family moved to Marion County Mississippi where John Rufus was born in 1845. John Rufus Cox joined the Confederate army in February of 1864, and was assigned to Company E, 38th Mississippi Cavalry, taking part in the battle of Tupelo in July. These dates also place Pvt. Cox with the army when the 38th took part in the battle of Harrisburg on July 14th, 1864. This was one of the bloodiest battles for the 38th Mississippi. The regiment was assigned to Colonel Mabry's brigade under the command of General Nathan B. Forrest. Mabry's Brigade was distinguished on the left flank. The 38th played a major roll in the attack which took place under heavy fire from artillery, and small arms. All the regimental officers of the brigade were killed or wounded. The 38th suffered the heaviest losses of the entire brigade (see the regimental history page for more info.) John is later shown as being a prisoner of war taken at Citronelle, Alabama. He was paroled on May 12, 1865 at Gainesville, Alabama. In 1869 he married for the first time to Eliza Jane Wilson and fathered 6 children. He married again in 1885 to Annie Marie Hutchinson who bore him 5 more children.
